This page covers the following processes:
- Terminating your licence (meaning a licensee is no longer able to trade in real estate in Nova Scotia.)
- Reinstating your licence
- Changing brokerages
- Changing your licensee class (i.e. salesperson to associate broker, etc.)
Changing brokerages is simply completing both steps: terminating from the old brokerage + reinstating with the new brokerage.
Changing licence classes is also the same: terminating your licence + reinstating by completing the application for the new licence class (permitting you meet the eligibility requirements)
Terminating a licence
To stop trading under your current brokerage, complete the Notice of Termination form and submit it to the Commission and submit it to the Commission within 48 hours. The form may be completed by either the licensee or the broker. There is no fee to terminate a licence.
The Commission does not “park” or “inactivate” licences.
Reinstating a licence
To reinstate your license to resume trading (either with the original brokerage or a new brokerage), complete the Reinstatement of Licence form and submit it to the Commission. This form must be signed by your broker or managing associate broker.
All licensees must have active Errors & Omissions (E&O) insurance in order to maintain their licence to trade in real estate.
Changing brokerages
To move from one brokerage to another, you complete both steps above:
- Terminate your licence with your current brokerage using the Notice of Termination form.
- Reinstate your licence with your new brokerage using the Reinstatement of Licence form.
Education Requirements
Keep up to date with your CPE: In order to reinstate your licence, any missed CPE must be completed in advance. Contact the Commission's This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for your CPE requirements.
Agency Course Required for Changing Agency Models: If you change agency models (e.g. common law to designated agency), you must complete the appropriate agency course within six weeks of reinstating. Contact the Nova Scotia Association of REALTORS® to register for the appropriate agency course.
Changing Licence Classes
To move to a higher licence class (e.g. salesperson to associate broker, etc.), you must meet the eligibility requirements for that class. Broker-level eligibility is required to hold a broker licence. (See Becoming a Broker.)
If eligible, you must complete the following steps:
- Terminate your existing licence using the Notice of Termination Form.
- Reinstate your licence in a new licence class using the correct licence application:
- Salesperson or Associate Broker Licensing Application
- Broker or Managing Associate Broker Licensing Application
Reinstatement timing rules
If reinstating within 30 days: Immediate reinstatement permitted
If reinstating after more than 90 days: A new criminal record check required (issued within the last 6 months)
After two years: There is no reinstatement after being terminated for two years or more. To become licensed again, are a new applicant: you must re-take the Salesperson Licensing Course and pass the exam.
Reinstatement fees
If reinstating within 30 days: $200 + HST
If reinstating after more than 90 days: $385 + HST (full licensing fee)
You must also maintain active Errors and Omissions (E&O) insurance at all times to trade.
