Stay In Your Lane

Licensees are expected to understand the limits of their role and avoid providing advice outside their area of expertise. While licensees are trained and authorized to assist consumers with trading in real estate under the Real Estate Trading Act, they are not lawyers, accountants, inspectors, or mortgage specialists. Providing advice in these areas can put consumers at risk.

The Commission’s new “Stay in Your Lane” page outlines what falls within a licensee’s role, and how Commission by-laws require licensees to recommend clients to seek independent expert advice when needed. The page also highlights the importance of working within your own skillset. Although Nova Scotia does not issue separate licences for specialties such as commercial or residential trading, licensees must ensure they have the knowledge, experience, and competence to handle the type of transaction involved.

Licensees are expected to review the page to better understand their obligations and how staying within their professional scope helps protect consumers and maintain trust in the real estate profession.

Deadline for Board Nominations is This Sunday

The deadline for licensees to nominate themselves to serve on the Commission Board of Directors by completing and submitting the Nomination Form is this Sunday, March 29, 2026 at 4pm. Eligible licensees must be in good standing and meet the qualifications per Commission by-law 207.

Important Dates Reminder

April 30, 2026: Annual General Meeting

June 15, 2026: Mandatory CPE Deadline

All licensees (salespeople, associate brokers, managing associate brokers, and brokers) are required to complete Professionalism Sells. All broker-level licensees (associate brokers, managing associate brokers, and brokers) are also required to complete the broker CPE: Keeping It on the Rails.

All licensees must complete their mandatory CPE course(s) by 11:59 p.m. on June 15, 2026. Failure to do so will result in ineligibility to renew your licence(s). Renewal eligibility will be reinstated once all required CPE courses have been successfully completed. Licensees can verify their CPE completion status at any time through the licensee portal.
